THE PROCESS
Josh Bashford’s practice begins not in the studio, but in movement — along the roads between Little River and Christchurch, in the shifting light across the lakes, and in the quiet act of observing. These moments are gathered, not documented, forming a lived memory that becomes the foundation of each work.
Back in the studio, the process is both physical and intuitive. Large woodblocks are carved by hand, allowing imagery to emerge gradually — birds, waterways, human forms — often revealing themselves over time rather than being strictly planned. Each mark carries a sense of rhythm and repetition, echoing both landscape and lived experience.
Working primarily with woodcut and monoprint techniques, Josh embraces a meditative approach, where carving, inking, and pressing become acts of reflection. The works are layered with meaning — drawing on themes of family, faith, gathering, and connection to the natural world — creating pieces that feel both grounded and quietly transformative.
Rather than capturing a single moment, each artwork holds a sense of unfolding. This is where details shift, reappear, and deepen the longer you sit with them.
